Legend tells that long ago an imperial scholar was traveling through China on his way to sit for his final exam. While passing through the Wuyi region, he became ill and could not continue. A local monk brought some special tea for the scholar, and upon drinking it his energy and health was restored and he was able to continue onward and pass his exams.
Upon returning to the imperial city, news came that the Emperor's wife was ill, and not getting better despite all efforts. Fortunately, the scholar had taken with him some of the special tea, and told the emperor of its profound healing qualities. The tea was brewed and given to the Empress, and soon her health was restored.
The Emperor was so impressed and so grateful for this tea, that he sent red imperial robes to cover the tea bushes that had saved his wife. From then on the tea was known as Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe). Even today, a few of these "original " tea bushes are protected by the government and can be seen in Wuyi.
Our Monk's Robe is an award winning version of Da Hong Pao that comes to us from the protected Wuyishan Ecological Reserve in Fujian Province, China. It is hand picked and hand roasted in bamboo baskets to bring out the famous "mineral" qualities that Wuyi oolong is known for.
It is highly recommended to brew this tea Gong Fu style over many, many steepings to truly enjoy all that it has to offer.
